A citation was presented to Charles M. Silverman, retiring board member and a founder of Operation Clean Government. Charlie has been Rhode Island's most prominent and outspoken advocate for restoring citizen confidence in state government. He is known for his work at the state house lobbying for voter initiative, campaign finance reform and state pension reform. After a receiving a kidney in 1997, donated by OCG board member Joe Mellen, Charlie's role has been reduced to that of an advisor and he will continue in this advisory role.
This year's annual meeting program was supposed to be a debate between Attorney General candidates Nancy Mayer and Sheldon Whitehouse, both of whom had agreed to debate at our meeting sometime ago. Mr. Whitehouse backed out of the debate only two weeks before our meeting.
In place of a debate, for one hour Nancy Mayer was interviewed by OCG Board member Bruce Lang and answered questions from the audience. The free wheeling discussion with Nancy Mayer was probably more interesting and enlightening than a debate might have been. It covered Mrs. Mayer's background, philosophies, accomplishments, observations on politics and government in Rhode Island, the race for Attorney General and the key priorities of the Attorney General's job. Those in attendance were treated to a refreshing in depth insight into Rhode Island politics and government.
Operation Clean Government holds accountable those whom the citizenry entrust with the stewardship of their state government. Transparency in government and the citizen's access to their government are essential to a healthy democracy. OCG advocates strong democratic laws and institutions that instill public confidence that common policies are fairly debated and decided on the merits, and that common resources are used responsibly.
