On Saturday, April 23, 2005, OCG will conduct a forum entitled Citizens' Interest vs. Special Interest promoting voter initiative. The forum will launch a major petition drive to get voter initiative on the general election ballot in November, 2006. In anticipation of the forum, our guests discuss what voter initiative is, the effects of big money on voter initiative, how voter initiative has increased voter turnout and affected civil rights in states that have adopted this legislation, and how Citizens for Limited Taxation in Massachusetts successfully petitioned for proposition 2 1/2 (using voter initiative) which has held down property taxes. Guests also discuss OCG's 2005 legislative agenda and the status of voter initiative bills in the General Assembly.
This episode was recorded on April 14, 2005 and runs approximately 30 minutes.
Operation Clean Government holds accountable those whom the citizenry entrust with the stewardship of their state government. Transparency in government and the citizen's access to their government are essential to a healthy democracy. OCG advocates strong democratic laws and institutions that instill public confidence that common policies are fairly debated and decided on the merits, and that common resources are used responsibly.
The next monthly meeting of the OCG Board of Directors is Thursday, October 6 at 6:45 p.m.
This month's meeting will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick, Rhode Island.
