Golden Broom Award


Operation Clean Government’s prestigious Golden Broom Award is presented to those individuals who, through selfless and exemplary service, have demonstrated a steadfast determination to promote honest, responsible and responsive state government and whose actions have contributed to this noble cause.



Recipients of the OCG Golden Broom  

  1. Former Supreme Court Justice Robert G. Flanders, Jr., October 2004, in recognition of his steadfast protection of our freedom and civil liberties through the authorship of several brilliant dissenting opinions.
  2. Representative Nicholas Gorham, January 2003, for his leadership in bringing Separation of Powers to Rhode Island.
  3. Arlene Violet, September 2000, for her courage and continuing efforts to promote honest, responsible and responsive state government.
  4. Senator Marc A. Cote, February 1999, for his dedicated efforts since 1994 sponsoring Voter Initiative legislation which is recognized by the California Commission on campaign financing as “the best voter initiative legislation” in the country.
  5. Secretary of State James R. Langevin, February 1998, for making governmental information more accessible through his Public Information Center and for his "Access Denied" report.
  6. Richard Morsilli, October 1997. For his exemplary five years of unpaid service as Chairman of the Ethics Commission and his courage in drafting and adopting new ethics codes and regulations for Separation of Powers for the legislative branch of government.
  7. Thomas and Barbara McHugh (former Executive Directors of the Government Accountability Project) August 1995. They spent four years of full time volunteer work to make research available to the citizens of Rhode Island.
  8. Bruce Lang (Operation Clean Government's co-founder and first chairperson), November 1994, for his far-reaching vision and unrelenting fight for honest, responsible and responsive state government.
  9. State Senator J. Michael Lenihan, March 1994, for his courage to stand up to the Bevilacqua leadership, opposing legislation which was not in the best interest of Rhode Islanders.
  10. Treasurer Nancy Mayer, November 1993, for her work in cleaning up the pension system and eliminating lists of so-called "favored" bond brokers.

 

Operation Clean Government holds accountable those whom the citizenry entrust with the stewardship of their state government. Transparency in government and the citizen's access to their government are essential to a healthy democracy. OCG advocates strong democratic laws and institutions that instill public confidence that common policies are fairly debated and decided on the merits, and that common resources are used responsibly.
